Back in 1998 a handful of D stock DMs had an anti-water strip fitted
over the front cab windows in an attempt to prevent staining of cab
windows when trains were washed in Upminster depot.
The experiment wasn’t pursued but those fitted with the modification
retained it, as seen on DM 7059 leading at Stamford Brook on 12 April
2006.
Although almost hidden by the grey paint, requiring a close look to
see them, these rainstrips have been fitted to refurbished trains of D
stock.
